Assignment Two: Lunch Poems

Due Date: See Syllabus
Peer Review: See Syllabus

Assignment Goal: The goal of this assignment is to create an argument about the meaning of a Frank O'Hara poem that incorporates meaning from all the references in it.

Assignment Description: Students may choose to fulfill this assignment in two ways. First, they can create a hyper-text version of a Frank O'Hara poem on their blog, and then post their essay on their blog. Second, they can turn in a regular paper-based essay.

For both versions, students will have to use their research skills to help them explain an O'Hara poem. Students will first pick from one of the poems below. They will then read it and interpret it alone, by itself. They will then do research that evaluates the references in the poem.

In their thesis statements, students will offer an explanation of the poem that includes some of the meaning they've learned from their research. They will then offer paragraphs that support that conclusion. Students will have to cite sources using MLA format, and include a bibliography of those sources.

Terminology: Students should incorporate terminology from class discussions about poetry.
