Due Date: 7/16
Peer Review: 7/11 (THIS IS A NEW DATE)
Length: 3-full pages to 5 pages
Assignment Goal: To create an argument about a main topic from the play using passages from the play as supporting evidence.
Assignment Description: Students will choose from one of the following three topics.
Requirement: All essays must use at least one outside, peer-reviewed academic source. All non-peer-reviewed sources must be approved by the professor in advance of the final draft.
1. Algernon - The character of Algernon is charismatic, crafty, snarky, and manipulative. For this essay on this topic, consider whether or not you think Algernon is justified in taking the actions that he does. Use evidence from the play to support your arguments; in that support, be sure to use 'close-reading' analysis of particular words and phrases to make your points. Be sure your thesis statement explains fully why you believe he is justified or not.
2. Marriage - This play can be considered a satirical take on marriage. For this essay on this topic, find a definition of satire and apply it to this play (be sure to find a reputable source, and to cite the source at the beginning of your essay). Then explain what qualities of marriage the play is satirizing, and state whether or not you believe the play's satire is effective.
3. Power - This is a play where various characters try and out-wit and out-duel each other to get what they want. In short, they want power and control over their lives, and they want access to the kinds of lives and persons that will bring the most...power (if not happiness). For this essay on this topic, define how social power works in this play. Discuss how different characters use it, and clarify the significance, for you, about how they use it.
As always, students must cite their sources according to MLA guidelines and provide a brief bibliography at the end.
